Guidance Research

The National Guidance Research Forum is an extensive online resource for guidance practitioners and researchers in the UK

The National Guidance Research Forum (NGRF) is an online resource for guidance practitioners and researchers in the UK, developed by KnowNet and the University or Warwick Institute for Employment Research in alliance with the Centre for Guidance Studies at the University of Derby. It contains extensive materials in two main areas: Future Trends in Labour Markets, and Making Guidance Effective, the latter having been developed collaboratively in an intensive process involving teams drawn from the communities of interest in online and face to face knowledge development exercises. It integrates closely with the National Library Resource for Guidance at Derby.

The NGRF site also provides an online focus and platform for discussion and knowledge development concerning guidance research practice and policy. The online knowledge development features and exercises within the NGRF will be intensively developed in autumn 2004.

NGRF News Launch of the National Guidance Research Forum
The National Guidance Research Forum (NGRF) was launched at an event in London on September 8th. KnowNet did the technology-development for the NGRF website, commissioned and closely supported by the Institute for Employment Research, University of Warwick. The site, which has involved numerous refinements and improvements of the Plone open-source content-management system, will serve as a key resource and collaboration space for guidance practitioners, researchers and policy-makers in the UK. It contains a huge, yet carefully considered, array of content, principally in the areas of Making Guidance More Effective and Future Trends / Labour Market Information.

Aims

Promoting evidence-based policy and practice in career work...

The National Guidance Research Forum was recently formed to unify the approach to research in information, advice and guidance.

There are two strands:

  • A Strategic Group - led by the Guidance Council and the National Institute for Careers Education and Counselling (NICEC)
  • A web forum, led by the Institute for Employment Research (IER), University of Warwick, and the Centre for Guidance Studies, University of Derby, in partnership with the Institute for Career Guidance (ICG), NICEC and the Guidance Council.

The web forum brings together the various facets of guidance research and practice into a single community space and features areas devoted to effective guidance, future labour-market trends and the National Library Resource for Guidance.

The Future Trends section of the website provides a portal to information and data on future trends for the careers research community - and a whole lot more: it’s about using future trends data to support reflection, knowledge creation and the development of the guidance community.

Who is it for?

Anyone with an interest in research in the broad area of guidance - Practitioners, Policy makers, Researchers, Managers, Students/trainees, Tutors/trainers...

The NGRF site and community is for anyone with an interest in research in the broad area of guidance - Practitioners, Policy makers, Researchers, Managers, Students/trainees, Tutors/trainers...

How do I join?

Joining the Guidance Research Forum is easy: just fill in the form here. You will be asked for a valid email address, and your initial password will be sent to that address.

What will I find there?

The NGRF site contains very extensive content and resources on future trends in the labour market and effective guidance, and a broad range of discussions on guidance-related topics

A wealth of resources targeted at Guidance researchers and practioners can be found at the National Guidance Research website.

Extensive content is available on Future Trends in Labour Markets.

Within the 'Making Guidance Effective' branch, content and discussions cover areas such as:

  • Equal Opportunities
  • Impact Analysis
  • Using Research in Practice
  • Improving Practice
  • Lifelong Learning

and affording users contact with colleagues from right across the Guidance community.

Links to the National Library Resource for Guidance gives users of the site access to the largest repository of Guidance literature in the UK.

What can I do?

On the NGRF site you can find useful resources and participate in a broad range of discussions...

You can contact and engage with colleagues and co-workers or those in fields of Guidance other than your own. You can participate in lively debate on all aspects of theory and practice, contributing to and expanding this valuable community resource.

You will have online access to the catalogue of the National Library Resource for Guidance, hosted at the University of Derby.

The Future Trends area of the site is a major new resource for the Guidance community, policy makers and researchers. It provides access to resources, discussions and documentation on trends in employment in the UK - supporting reflection, knowledge creation and guidance community development.

How active is it?

Since its official launch in September 2004, the NGRF site and community has been attracting new members as well as interest from a range of organisations in the guidance community. It is expected to continue to grow as a community through 2005, especially as new collaborative features and opportunities are introduced.

Although the NGRF site is relatively new, a vital and active community of Guidance practitioners, researchers, teachers and students is forming.

As the membership grows, so will the depth and importance of this already valuable resource - becoming the lynchpin of the UK Guidance community.

What do they say?

The development of this site is an ongoing project. It is an interactive website which aims to support a community of interest in guidance. It depends on your participation to develop and come alive.

The overall purpose of this website is to bring practice and research closer together.  This depends on your involvement.  Don't hold back, join an online community which has the potential to make things happen in career guidance at all levels.

This site is for practitioners; managers; trainers; researchers and policy makers - or anyone with an interest in guidance.  All are welcome to access the resources and use the interactive features.  If you wish to add comments and participate in discussions simply log in to register.

Any feedback in relation to this site is welcome - email us.
