SIGOSEE / JOIN

ossite is the Open Source Software in Education website, developed by the EC sponsored SIGOSSEE and JOIN projects. The projects aim to provide information, advice, guidance and research on the use of open source software in education for the education community, for policy makers and planners and for educational software developers. SIGOSSEE supports a Special Interest Group on open source software in education, and provides access to publications, discussions and collaborative activities.

SIGOSSEE / JOIN News SIGOSEE meeting in Barcelona
The next meeting of the SIGOSEE project is in Barcelona on 1 and 2 November. The first day will be given over to developments in the Special Interest Group and the second day will feature a public seminar on Open Content and Open Source. The meeting is being held together with the JOIN project and the Sixth Framework UNFOLD project, which is developintg a community around the Learning Design Standard. As always everone is welcome to the meeting.

SIGOSSEE / JOIN News New paper
Raymond Elferink, Dai Griffiths and Sara Zondergeld have created an article called: 'Comparing Software Development Models: Structural Problems in the Cathedral and Bazaar metaphors.' It is a first product of the Working group on Organisation and management issues, sustainability and support infrastuctural needs for OSS.
SIGOSSEE / JOIN News New study on the Sustainability of e-learning
Graham Attwell has produced an extensive study on the Sustainability of e-learning. Produced in conjunction with the Lefo project, which is associated with Sigossee, the paper explores Open Source and Open Content as part of an overall strategy for the sustainability of e-learning. Aims

Promoting evidence-based policy and practice in career work...
  1. To provide an objective appraisal of the relevance and benefit of Open Source Software (OSS), and the opportunities it affords, to the European educational community.
  2. To investigate and report on the context of OSS, especially in relation to open standards for software and data and to provide a platform for EU planning on the subject.
  3. To investigate major issues appertaining to the use of Open Source Software for education in Europe, in particular:
    • Standards and architectures for OSS
    • User requirements and usability issues in the development of OSS
    • Social, cultural and legal issues in OSS
    • Organisation and management issues, sustainability and support infrastructural needs for OSS
  4. To develop and maintain an interactive web based information point on OSS for education, fully standards compliant, incorporating web based tools for project development and offering dispersed intranet services for SIG members.
  5. To study take-up of OSS in selected institutions over the lifetime of the project, in order to determine best practice in different environments. The SIG will seek partnerships with other agencies and initiatives in the field in order to facilitate dissemination and information exchange.

The community is growing rapidly, and we expect to see much more activity in 2005 as the importance of these issues becomes even more pronounced.

  • The development of a catalogue of examples of good practice
  • The sharing of news and information about Open Source for education
